About
Ethiopian Democratic Action League, or commonly known as TEGBAR, was officially formed on June 26, 1997. The group’s main objective when it was formed has been to give voice to the thousands of political prisoners who are languishing in jail.
Tegbar attempted to create international awareness for the plight of the political prisoners by staging protest rallies, peaceful civil disobedience, vigils, town hall meetings, and family events in several cities around the world. Tegbar also organized petition drives, and meetings with government officials. When fellow Ethiopian citizens were mistreated in other countries, Tegbar members went to action. We were successful in some cases, such as helping stop the death sentence against an Ethiopian woman, Yeshiworq Desta, in Bahrain, and securing the release of General Haile Melese from prison in Sudan. Tegbar members around the word held regular meetings to coordinate their efforts worldwide.
Starting 2002, Tegbar members decided to continue their struggle through the political parties in preparation for the 2005 elections. Today, the dictatorial regime in Ethiopia is waging an all out war against the opposition parties who won the elections. Thousands of opposition leaders and members are unjustly languishing in jail under inhumane conditions. Innocent civilians are being arrested, tortured, and murdered through out the country. Tegbar is joining other Ethiopian organizations to fight back. We can win only through organized efforts.
Please join us in the struggle to liberate our country from Meles Zenawi’s fascistic dictatorship.
